1. What a fragrance is made of

Most fragrances contain three main components: Aromatic ingredients – natural (flowers, woods, spices) or synthetic scent molecules Alcohol or carrier oils – helps spread and evaporate the scent Fixatives – slow down evaporation so the scent lasts longer Natural sources include things like rose, jasmine, sandalwood, citrus, and vanilla, while synthetic ingredients can recreate natural smells or invent entirely new ones.

2. Fragrance structure: “notes”

Perfumes are designed in layers called notes, which change over time after you apply them:

Top notes (first impression) Smelled immediately after spraying Light and fresh Examples: citrus, bergamot, mint 🍋

Middle notes (heart notes) Appear after the top notes fade Define the main character of the fragrance Examples: rose, lavender, cinnamon 🌹

Base notes Appear last and last the longest Deep, warm scents Examples: amber, musk, sandalwood 🌲

3. Fragrance families: Perfumes are grouped into scent families based on their dominant smell: Floral – rose, jasmine, peony (romantic, classic) 🌷 Woody – cedar, sandalwood, vetiver (warm, earthy) 🌳 Fresh – citrus, aquatic, green (clean and light) 🌊 Oriental / Amber – vanilla, spices, resins (rich and warm) ✨ Fougère – lavender, oakmoss, coumarin (common in men’s fragrances)

4. Fragrance strength levels: Perfumes vary by concentration of fragrance oils, which affects how long they last. Parfum / Extrait – 20–40% oil (very strong, lasts 8–12 hours) Eau de Parfum (EDP) – 15–20% (lasts 6–8 hours) Eau de Toilette (EDT) – 5–15% (lasts 3–5 hours) Eau de Cologne (EDC) – 2–5% (lighter, lasts ~2 hours)

5. How fragrance interacts with your skin: A scent can smell different on different people because of: Skin chemistry Body temperature Diet and hormones Skin moisture That’s why it’s always best to test a fragrance on your skin, not just a paper strip.

6. Tips for wearing fragrance: Apply to pulse points (wrists, neck, behind ears). Don’t rub your wrists together—it can break down the top notes. Moisturized skin helps scents last longer. Store fragrances away from heat and sunlight to preserve them.

💡 Fun fact: Humans can recognize over a trillion different scents, making smell one of the most powerful senses tied to memory.
